Portrait from Germany

This is a photograph from RetouchPro of a woman from Germany. To restore this faded photograph we performed the following:

  • Opened up the tonal range (shadows, midtones and highlights)
  • Cleaned up the unmatching bottom and side areas
  • Hand-colored the photograph
  • Strengthened the handwriting on the lower right
  • Smoothed out certain areas of the face and sharpened in others (ex. eyes, mouth).
"Returned from World War II"

This is a photograph taken right after the end of World War II. The Client wanted the picture cleaned up, enlarged and colored. This is how we performed the restoration:

  • Repaired scratches, dust, stains
  • Adjusted overall tone and contrast
  • Hand-coloring the photograph to the specifications of the Customer
  • Smoothed out the coarseness in the faces
  • Enlarged the photograph

"In the Jeep - 1957"

This is a 1957 black and white photograph of a little boy in his peddle-powered jeep. To retouch it we performed the following:

  • Opened up the tonal range (shadows, midtones and highlights) of the photograph
  • Hand-colored the photograph
  • Sharpened overall photograph

Muskrat Trapper

This photo is from the "Voices from the Thirties" project at the Library of Congress. It is a picture of a muskrat trapper in the doorway of his marsh house in St. Bernards Paris, Delacroix Island, Louisiana. The photo was taken by Marian Post Wolcott. To restore it we performed the following steps:

  • Opened up the tonal range (shadows, midtones and highlights)
  • Hand-colorized
  • Applied overall sharpening

Grandfather ~ 1904

This photograph was taken around 1904, and it is a picture of a grandfather. The picture has faded significantly over the years, lacks sharpness, and contains a lot of coarseness. To restore it we performed the following steps:

  • Opened up the tonal range (shadows, midtones and highlights)
  • Removed the coarseness
  • Sharpened the image
  • Replaced the background
  • Hand-colored the photograph using the Client's instructions
